How city tickets work

In Polish cities you travel by bus and tram, and in Warsaw also by metro and fast urban rail. You buy a ticket before or when boarding and — if it is a paper/single ticket — you validate it immediately in the vehicle.

The most common ticket types: single (one journey), time-based (e.g. 20/60/90 minutes, with transfers) and period (daily, weekly, monthly — worthwhile for commuting to work). Many cities have zones — check whether your workplace is in a different zone than where you live.

Apps for tickets and routes

The easiest way is to have your ticket on your phone. jakdojade is used for route planning and buying tickets in dozens of cities. You can also buy tickets in apps such as moBiLET, mPay, SkyCash, zBiletem — paying by card or BLIK.

The pattern is always similar: download the app → register → link a card or top up the wallet → choose the city, line and ticket type → buy and (if required) activate the ticket when boarding the vehicle.

Watch out for inspections. Travelling without a valid (validated/activated) ticket risks a fine. An app ticket also has to be activated — purchase alone is not enough. You need internet on your phone to buy a ticket online.

FAQ

Does the driver sell tickets?
Less and less often. The safest way is to buy a ticket in an app, from a ticket machine (often in the vehicle or at the stop) or at a kiosk. In many cities, machines in vehicles accept contactless cards.
Does one time-based ticket cover transfers?
Yes — a time-based ticket (e.g. 60-minute) allows transfers within its validity period. A single ticket usually covers one journey.
Am I entitled to discounts?
Discounts (concessions) apply to pupils and students and selected groups, among others — each city sets its own rules. Check the website of the city transport authority (e.g. ZTM).
